Guidance for parents
Finding learning opportunities
Learning can be found all around you. Take time to discuss and ask questions and encourage your young adult to do the same to you, and above all, remember to have fun.
Here are some guidelines to help you with learning at home, and to support you in maintaining the wellbeing of you and your family.
The three main things that your teen is going to need when learning at home are:
Routine
Routines can be set but think wider in terms of learning opportunities to keep your teen motivated. Talking over the planning of meals, ordering online deliveries or arranging to collect the ingredients and cook them, is an example of how your teenager can develop project planning as well as new skills and experiences.
Connecting with friends
Teenagers in particular need social connection. Their brain is wired for experimentation, without weighing up consequences. Because they may be impulsive and decide to take risks, it’s worth explaining why Government guidelines need to be followed.
When parenting teenagers it is often more effective to ask questions rather than instructing.
Encourage them to stay connected to their friends responsibly, whilst following Government guidelines.
Feeling successful
Encourage them to write (journals, blogs, diaries, messages, cards) this helps them to develop positive skills and increase communication with their friends.
There are plenty of activities you can do at home. For example, setting up table tennis over a dining table or in the garden if you have an outdoor space. Our museums and public buildings are also offering virtual tours.
